Ah, social media marketing—the golden goose that promises to lay endless golden eggs but more often than not, delivers a steady stream of disappointment and debt. Businesses eagerly dive into the social media abyss, convinced that endless scrolling and heart-shaped likes will magically translate into booming profits.
Yet, behind the glittering facade of viral posts and influencer endorsements lies a harsh reality: the hidden costs, algorithmic whims, and relentless content churn that drain resources faster than a leaky bucket.
Welcome to the grand illusion where your marketing budget goes to die, and your business dreams are buried under a mountain of digital dust.
It's Funny...
But you know, it's funny how businesses nowadays rely heavily on social media to boost sales and reach more starving eyeballs. "I've got a new offer out on my website, why don't we post it on our social media page to inform our 250 followers about this amazing offer".
For some, posting content everyday is a religion.
Well, back in 2013, it was the hot stuff. Businesses could use it to reach new customers and build a loyal following. But now, can you say the same thing anymore. We just see random posts these days.
Social media drones naturally skip anything that is an ad...
You posts every single day, but your posts never goes viral or people don't engage in it. Even the loyal followers that you thought were loyal, are now, well! disloyal. It's all a mess! You go to google to type the frequently used and infamous keyword
"How can i build a large amount of followers on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube?" You just name it! And we see the same Bullcrap every single time.
Define Your Target Audience. ... blahh blahh!
Develop a Consistent and Unique Brand Identity. ...
Content Strategy. ...
Engage with Your Audience. ...
Optimize Your Posts for Discoverability. ...
Leverage Instagram Features and Tools. ...
Monitor and Analyze Your Performance.
Tell me, has this crap worked for you?
But really, that is 'straight outta Google' though. And how many businesses have tried this tactic and failed miserably. When we type this, we're given vague answers that don't even help anyone.
Business owners need to understand that, marketing has changed, even social media. It no longer used to be what or how it was. I mean, do you expect to be posting on Instagram for your business till you die, and yet see no results. Businesses don't even know what engaging with an audience means. No one wants to see your stupid posters on TikTok or Instagram.
I mean, we're here to watch content, not to be sold to. People hate those kinds of posts.
Back in 2016, it might have been the best way to get your product into the faces of mindless scrollers, but now, things are different. Everything has changed entirely.
The terms and agreements have changed, without you knowing...
The best businesses no longer use social media to advertise, and get more followers. They now use it to build communities. A community that even if Mark decides to blow up instagram and Facebook today, that community will follow you to the grave.
In a Saturated platform filled with over 2 Billion people, how the hell do you expect to stand out, when you're doing what everyone else is doing. The list that i gave above, which i call the seven deadly sins, used to be in the clouds, they used to be the hot stuff back then and felt like they were on top of the world, but now, they have lost their value.
Literally falling from heaven, now they're just a bunch of stray fallen angels...
From the beginning of time community building has always been applied. From leading the isrealites out of slavery, to George Washington leading the Americans.
Everything has always been about community, not attracting people whom you think are followers, when all they do is follow you based on adrenaline, and then they scroll off to the next potential person to follow. Not even looking back when you post new ones.
That shit is just Temporary...
Relationships built on adrenaline never last.
Now let me just give you a few reasons why your business grows broke everyday from social media, instead of making profits.
1. High Cost of Continuous Engagement:

Social media marketing requires continuous engagement and content creation to stay relevant and maintain audience interest. This means businesses must invest heavily in creating high-quality content, managing social media accounts, and responding to customer inquiries promptly.
These activities can be time-consuming and costly, often requiring dedicated staff or expensive outsourcing.
You heard that right!
Because, even this social media managers don't know shit!
They've been given this same deadly sins to follow too, and you just pay them because you think that posting regularly is best for you business.
Except that, you're posting for no one in particular, because no one is really looking at you.
2. Ad Spend with Limited ROI:

Many businesses invest substantial amounts in social media advertising with the hope of achieving significant returns. However, the cost of social media ads can quickly add up, especially with increased competition.
Without a well-defined strategy and continuous optimization, businesses may see limited returns on their investment, resulting in wasted resources.
Mark makes more money while you hunt...
Everyday, Mark and his team of IT nerds tweak the algorithm, just to make social media more competitive. Now everything is like a battle field. On TikTok, when a new song to dance with comes out, everyone rushes to use it. It's like throwing a goat into a lion's den. Now, we're back to the days of hunting savagely.
It's really fierce. Now businesses use these trendy sounds in hopes of going viral with it, if they succeed, great! Later on, when the trend ends, they are back to the same old situation: 'How can we get more views and engagement on our posts'.
Is this you?
3. Algorithm Dependency:

Social media platforms frequently change their algorithms, which can significantly impact the visibility of a business’s posts.
Companies might spend a lot of time and money creating content only to have it reach a small fraction of their audience due to algorithm changes. This unpredictability can make it challenging to achieve consistent results.
Now businesses posts in the hopes of maybe, just maybe the algorithm will boost their content. They no longer make content for the people now it's for the algorithm. "Content of the algorithm and for the algorithm " how ironic!
4. Analysis Paralysis and Misguided Strategies:

The vast amount of data generated from social media can lead to analysis paralysis, where businesses spend too much time analyzing metrics without taking actionable steps.
Additionally, businesses might be tempted to chase trends and metrics that do not align with their core objectives, leading to misguided strategies and wasted resources.
I think i've said this before but, some business owners are stubborn, they don't want to face the harsh reality of how everything has now changed.
And last but not the least...
5. Saturation and Attention Fatigue:

The oversaturation of content on social media platforms means that businesses must work increasingly harder to stand out.
Users experience attention fatigue, leading to decreased engagement rates and the necessity for more aggressive and expensive marketing tactics.
Remember, there are over 2 Billion users on each social media platforms, so, how the hell do you expect to stand out among the crowd?
If you look closley at some famous influencers in Nigeria, there's one common thing about them. They make videos for their loyal viewers only, not for the algorithm. Most of them have millions of followers, but how many views do they get from the millions of followers?
Probably just a few hundred thousand, or if they're lucky, a few MILLIONS.
So it's your choice, would you rather choose to let social media make your business grow poorer everyday?
Would you still use it after this?
Or will you ditch the conventional way of doing things and well, reverse engineer the whole thing?
I wanna hear your thoughts!
